I stayed in the orphanage between June and august 2006. It
was a fantastic experience. The orphanage had been
set up just over a year before I arrived. There are
twelve children living there and a very dedicated
team of workers incharge of the day to day running
of the orphanage. Paban and Madan, the chairman and
vice-chairman respectively have both left their jobs
so they can be fully involved during these difficult
early stages.
Initially they received some funds
so that was helpful in getting things off the ground.
At this stage most funds are almost gone and the orphanage
is at a critical stage. We all hope they can get through
this because the plans for the future are exciting.
At the moment there is no self-funding program although
there is plans for training some members and also
other members of the community in certain crafts.
When this idea develops it will be vital in the organization
becoming self sufficient and not relying entirely
on outside help.
With regards to anyone considering
coming to Nepal as a volunteer I would strongly recommend
it. They are all very welcoming and helpful. The conditions
are very comfortable and the children are amazing.
They love foreigners being around and it is so helpful
with there English too. Also Kathmandu and Nepal as
a whole is a truly beautiful place. There is endless
things to see and do and everyone here will be more
than happy to bring you to places and to show you
around. There are many volunteers in Kathmandu so
you will surely meet people as well.
